郑州取消所有公安分局
In an effort to streamline police duties, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, overhauled the organization of its police departments Saturday by combining all 10 of its sub-offices with 114 stations to form 29 new stations, Xinhua reports. Police stations now fall directly under police offices, without a police sub-office intermediary. Zhengzhou hopes the move will speed up response.
据新华社报道，6日河南郑州市的10个公安分局全部取消，与原来的114个派出所整合，成立29个派出所，指挥层级由过去的'市公安局-公安分局-派出所'减少为'市公安局-派出所'，以提高快速反应能力。

Newly enrolled female students exceeded males this year for the first time in the 91-year history of coeducation at Nankai University, the Beijing Youth Daily reports. The university's enrolment report says 1,662 female students joined as undergraduates this year, accounting for 53.1% of the 3,127 freshers. The increase of female students follows government efforts to boost the number of girls in higher education. It also reflects a marked change from earlier times when girls had far fewer educational opportunities than boys.
据《北京青年报》消息，南开大学今年招收的女生人数超过男生，在该校男女同校办学的91年历史中尚属首次。南开的招生报告显示，今年，该校3127名新生中有女生1662人，约占总招生人数53.1%。女大学生的增长显示了政府为保障教育公平所做的努力，也折射出社会观念的变迁：在过去，很多家庭受'重男轻女'思想影响较重，女孩求学机会偏低。

Chinese telecom companies looking to break into the US market have been met with obstacles related to national security, the First Financial Daily reports. Insiders say that although the quote price of Huawei and ZTE is lower than Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Samsung, US carrier Sprint Nextel still excluded them in a bid for a billion-dollar purchase deal recently. The US Department of Defense and some lawmakers are worried that letting Huawei and ZTE enter the US telecom network will endanger national security. ZTE CEO Shi Lirong said the situation the company is facing in US is an indication of anti-competition, protectionism and anti-foreignism.

>Hostage shot dead by Somali pirates

A man was shot dead Sunday after refusing to disembark from a yacht that was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean last week, Reuters reports. The victim's nationality was not immediately clear. Somali pirates hijack vessels and hold them until ransom money is paid, but they rarely kill their hostages.

A 2,000-year-old ancient Roman house for gladiators collapsed in the buried city of Pompeii in the early hours of Saturday morning, the Daily Telegraph reports. Culture Minister Sandro Bondi said the probable cause was rain water that had infiltrated the house when it was restored with cement at the end of the Second World War after suffering bomb damage.

British Prime Minister David Cameron will pay an official visit to China on Tuesday with the biggest ever delegation, Xinhua reports. Cameron's two-day tour is his first visit to China as the head of government. He headed the Conservative Party's delegation to China in December 2007.
新华社消息，英国首相卡梅伦将于11月9日和10日率领'历史上最大规模'访华团对中国进行正式访问，这是他继2007年12月率领英国保守党代表团访华之后，首次以首相身份访问中国。

Statistics show that 360 has lost 60 million customers, approximately 20% of its market share, in its ongoing battle with Tencent, the Beijing Daily reports. Tencent CEO Ma Huateng said yesterday that its WebQQ chat page and online games run by Kingsoft were under attack from 360, an allegation dismissed by 360 described as an ugly lie.

>Bees' tiny brains beat computers

Research has shown that bees can solve complex mathematical problems that keep computers busy for days, the Guardian reported. Using computer-controlled artificial flowers to test bee behavior, researchers wanted to know whether the insects would follow a simple route defined by the order in which they found the flowers, or look for the shortest route. After exploring the location of the flowers, the bees quickly learned to fly the shortest route for saving time and energy. In this way, they effectively solved the 'traveling salesman problem,' which involves finding the shortest route that allows a traveling salesman to call at all the locations he has to visit. Computers solve the problem by comparing the length of all possible routes and choosing the one that is shortest. But bees manage to reach the same solution using a brain the size of a grass seed.
