组建翻译黑名单之名词系列（三）

各位小伙伴狗年快乐呀~新的一年黑名单版块又要和大家见面啦！经过前几期推送，不知道大家有没有养成定期记录词语误用的习惯呢？由于名词类的误用居多，本学期我们将继续从这一版块开始，希望能给大家带来收获和启示。

1、Talent

原文：我们要注重培养专业的外语人才。

初译：We should be committed to cultivating professional foreign language talents.

审校：We should be committed to preparing our students to become foreign language professionals.

“培养人才”怎么译？看到这个问题，有些小伙伴们可能就会这么想：“培养”是cultivate，“人才”是talent，所以培养人才就是cultivate talent。事实真的如此吗？

首先我们来看看talent在《朗文当代英语辞典》中的英文释义：

①a natural ability to do something well

②a person or people with a natural ability or skill

从上面的释义中，我们可以看出当talent指“人才”的时候，指的是那种有天赋的“天才”，他们的某些能力是与生俱来的，所以这个意思和cultivate搭配不合理。

然后，小编用谷歌搜索cultivate talents，发现确实有很多这样的表达，但是意思不再是“培养人才”，而是培养某种能力。

① ...opportunities designed to help cultivate individual talents and abilities... 

② ...which will then cultivate the talents and skills of all student...

③ ...We teach to help our students cultivate their talents, their character and their aspirations. 

④ ...our students grow academically, develop their independence, cultivate their talents and interests...

小伙伴们下次遇到“培养”人才不要再翻译成cultivate talents喽！

2、technique 和 technology

原文：这种绘画技术最早出现于中国。

初译：This drawing technology was invented by ancient Chinese.

审校：This drawing technique was invented by ancient Chinese.

审校最重要的改动就是把technology换成了technique。两个词的中文译法差别不大，都可以用“技术”来表示，但是实际上他们的含义差别很大，有各自不同的适用范围。朗文对这两个词的定义分别是：

① A technique is a particular method of doing an activity, usually a method that involves practical skills.

② Scientific knowledge used in practical ways in industry, for example in designing new machines. 

总而言之，就是technique多指“某一领域（如艺术、体育等）的专门技术或技巧”，而technology含义比 technique 广泛，尤指“生产工艺以及科学或工业技术”，或者是不断更新换代的科技，比如人工智能等。原文中的“绘画技巧”毫无疑问属于technique的范畴，小伙伴们再遇到“技术”这个词，翻译的时候一定要擦亮眼睛，做出正确判断。

3、number 和 amount

想到数量单位，大家肯定会想到number和amount这两个单词，它们都表示“数量”、“总量”的意思。但是为什么要把这两个单词拎出来说呢？

大家一定认为这两个单词是可以互相替换的，但是实际并非如此。先给大家一些例句。

① The drug increases the number of red cells in the blood, enhancing oxygenuptake by 10 percent. 

② Two significant constants have been found in a number of research studies.

③This may provide a quick and accurate way of monitoring the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

④ Sure, and in the tuning process we will try to find an amount of experience that discourages this. 

看完这几个例句，大家就会发现number和amount的含义虽然相同，但是后面紧跟的名词是不同的。number后接可数名词，而amount后接不可数名词，此外amount还有表示“金额”的意思，这点是number所没有的。
