Have /get something done

Reading：

Three of the biggest man-made projects in the world are the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Egypt and the Aswan High Dam, which is also in Egypt. Both the Great Wall and the Pyramids were built in the ancient times.

In 221 B.C. the kingdom of Qin united the different parts of China into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls which had been built earlier joined up. Thus the Great Wall came into being. In ancient Egypt, kings had their tombs built when they were still alive, and these strong tombs were pyramids

I.Have something done 的一般用法：

自己不做而雇别人来做某事,用 have something done

A.Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls which had been built earlier joined up.

B.In ancient Egypt, kings had their tombs built when they were still alive

注：have somebody(something) do,使（让）别人去做

Mother had me wash clothes on Sundays.(wash是 me的主动动作。)

have somebody(something) doing 使（让）一种状态延续

Don’t have the horse running all the time. (running是 the horse的主动动作。)

II．Have/get something done 的其他用法

Reading：

When Steve and Louise bought their flat, it was in a terrible state. They couldn’t do all the jobs themselves. So they had central heating installed. They also got the windows replaced and they had the flat painted. But they haven’t had the carpets cleaned yet. And now they need to have a new lock fitted to the front door because yesterday Louise had her car broken into and her handbag stolen. The front door key was in her bag.

1. 可以用get代替have. get 比have 更不正式

They got (或 had) the windows replaced. .

2. 当谈及某件不愉快的事发生在某人身上时,也用have something done.

Louise had her car broken into . She had her bag stolen.

注 通常get在此不能代替 have.

小练习II.  下列句式中，那些事是他们自己做的?

1 They had some new curtains made.

2 They put up some shelves.

3 They had a telephone installed.

4 They decorated the bedrooms.

III.．have something done的构成：

1 注意动词have在时态上的变化.

2 在这种结构中不用have的缩写形式 (’ve, ’s, ’d) .

They had the flat painted. (不是They’d flat painted.)
