Dear friends, today I’d like to make an introduction of the open-air show, “Nine Dragons Bathing the Baby Buddha”.
Lingshan Wonderland, located in a cultural city called Wuxi between Shanghai and Nanjing, is a grand-scale and distinctive Buddhism culture theme park. As a China’s famous tourism brand, Lingshan Wonderland has become the landmark scenic spot of Wuxi’s tourism, attracting over 3 million tourists worldwide every year.
Lingshan Wonderland dates back to 1994,consisting of various tourist attractions of Buddhism culture, such as the world’s highest bronze statue of Sakyamuni “Lingshan Grand Buddha”, a grand dynamic music sculpture “Nine Dragons Bathing the Baby Buddha”, Lingshan Buddhist Palace.
Sakyamuni’s father was the king of a small local state in ancient India. When his father was over 50, his mother, Queen Maya, became pregnant. One day, she was wandering in the Lumbini Garden. She saw a pure, shady tree that was growing luxuriantly. As she raised up her hands to break off a branch, unexpectedly Sakyamuni came forth from her right side and there were all sorts of auspicious signs. The whole country rejoiced. The story goes that, when Sakyamuni was 7 years old, his mother, Queen Maya, unfortunately passed away. Sakyamuni was therefore nurtured and raised by his aunt, whose name is translated into Chinese as “path of great love”. He received the love and protection of his aunt, who cared for him as a mother would.
Buddhist scriptures say, Sakyamuni, the creator of Buddhism, could speak and walk an soon as he was born. He walked seven steps towards eastern, southern, western and northern directions each. At every step the ground yielded a lotus flower. Pointing to the heaven with one hand and pointing to the earth with another, he said:”In the heaven and on the earth, I am the most venerable.” At this time nine dragons approached in the sky and poured out water streams to bathe Sakyamini.
The world-class and nation’s unique grand dynamic music sculpture “Nine Dragons Bathing the Baby Buddha” is a cultural sight with a powerful heart-quake force. It vividly reconstructs the holy and grand scene of “The Buddha’s rising up when a lotus flower’s blooming”, which happened at the birth of Sakyamuni in Buddhist scriptures. All the viewers are fascinated by this excellent originality and shocking scene and do not want to go home.
It is a combination of the traditional art of Buddhist sculpture and modern technology with a most original design, the whole sculpture reaches 27 meters high, 18 kilos of gold and 180 tons of bronze are used in casting it.
In tune with music, the petals of the lotus gradually open and the child Buddha rises up from within. At the same time, the statues of nine dragons spray water as high as 30 meters to wash his body. After this, the phoenixes around the fountain also begin to jet water. This is claimed to be holy water blessed by Buddha, which will bring good luck and peace to you and your family. You can drink it or put it in a bottle and take it home. On the eighth of April with the Chinese lunar calendar, a grand ceremony is held right here to celebrate the Buddha’s birth on that day.
