英汉翻译练习之GEB Overview 第二章

写在前面

本篇是翻译 GEB 第二章的 overview，然后与 GEB 中文译本比较学习。主要是出于两个目的：

• 翻译练习：GEB 的中文翻译是非常称赞的，自己翻译练习一下，然后比较学习。
• 长知识：神书太厚难，所以先只选择目录翻译，从整体上先了解个大概，多少也可以说看过点了。。。

Chapter II: Meaning and Form in Mathematics.

A new formal system (the pq-system) is presented, even simpler than the MIU-system of Chapter I. Apparently meaningless at first, its symbols are suddenly revealed to possess meaning by virtue of the form of the theorems they appear in. This revelation is the first important insight into meaning: its deep connection to isomorphism. Various issues related to meaning are then discussed, such as truth, proof, symbol manipulation, and the elusive concept, "form".

Sonata for Unaccompanied Achilles. A Dialogue which imitates the Bach Sonatas for unaccompanied violin. In particular, Achilles is the only speaker, since it is a transcript of one end of a telephone call, at the far end of which is the Tortoise. Their conversation concerns the concepts of "figure" and "ground" in various contexts- e.g., Escher's art. The Dialogue itself forms an example of the distinction, since Achilles' lines form a "figure", and the Tortoise's lines-implicit in Achilles' lines-form a "ground".

第一句没啥，再现了 present, 我已经熟悉了。

Apparently meaningless at first, its symbols are suddenly revealed to possess meaning by virtue of the form of the theorems they appear in.

at first 很容易直译成“首先”,”起初“，从这句话的语境上，译成”乍看上去，乍一看“更符合中文习惯，可以理解成 at first sight/glance。这样的话 apparently 就没必要翻了，乍看上去的肯定是很明显能看出的了。

还想提一下，有时候够细心的话，Apparently meaningless at first 会很简单翻成 乍看上去毫无意义，这其实在中文就又不通了。什么东西毫无意义？这种句式又是中英文语言的一个不同之处。

我们中文习惯说：尽管这些符号毫无意义，它们...

英文习惯则是说：Although (they are) meaningless, these symbols...

区别便是，从句中英文要用代词，真正的主语出现在后面。而中文则相反，我们是先说具体要说的东西，后面再用或不用代词。这是因为，英文不喜欢重复，中文不怕重复。

Be revealed to: 遇到这种被动语态翻译的时候就卡一下。reveal 我只记了基本义揭露，揭示，其实引申便是显示，显露，甚至还有启示的意思，在这个句子里显示便合适了。英文看似“被显示出具有意义”，其实就是中文习惯的“显示出有意义”，这也是中英文的一个区别。我个人其实不太喜欢讲“具有意义”，我翻译成了“被赋予了意义”。这句话我的版本是：乍一看系统中的符号毫无意义，但符号出现在定理形式中后，就突然被赋予了意义。（我等于意译了 by virtual of?）。GEB 中文版：乍看上去其中的符号毫无意义，但借助于定理的形式，那些符号突然显示出具有意义。留意到我上面提到的中文不怕重复了吧？

revelation 乍看上去和 reveal 好像呀，是它的名词吗？好像又不是，reveal 的名词是 revealment 吧，不过没怎么见过用。revelation 字典上看和 reveal 意思差不多。作者就是在指代前面一句里面的 reveal。

the (first important) insight of sth：词汇贫乏就是要命，我知道 insight 就是洞察，即观察的很清楚，很深入，了解的很深刻，但不能这么翻啊。我翻的很生硬，发出来大家见笑了：“第一个重要见解”。GEB 中文版译为“初次剖析”， 太棒了，可不是嘛！

我翻了字典，觉得有必要学几个其他关于 insight 的中文表达，让我也 gain 点 insight：

两个基本义：

• 洞察，深入了解
• 领悟

例句：

• the insight into meaning: 对意义的剖析
• a person of insight 有洞察力的人
• He was a man with considerable insight.他是个富有洞察力的人。
• a woman of great insight一位极有眼光的女性
• show insight into human character 表现出对人性的深刻了解
• The project would give scientists new insights into what is happening to the earth's atmosphere...该项目将使科学家对地球大气层的状况有更新的深入了解
• a book full of remarkable insights 很有真知灼见的书
• have/gain an insight into a problem 对某问题豁然开朗
• She was given an unpleasant insight into what life would be like as his wife. 她恍然大悟嫁给他就要过那种日子, 心里十分难过.
• It was an interesting book, full of fascinating insights into human relationships.这是一本有趣的书，充满了对人际关系独到的见解
• The article gives us a real insight into the causes of the present economic crisis.这篇文章分析了目前经济危机的原因，发人深省。
• The research provides new insights into the way we process language.该研究对我们处理语言的方式提出了新的看法。
• With a flash of insight I realized what the dream meant. 我突然明白了这个梦意味着什么。

the elusive concept,: difficult to find, define, or achieve, 难以发现，难以定义，难以捉摸等等。我译成“难懂”觉得也可。GEB 中文译的“难以捉摸”

Sonata for Unaccompanied Achilles. 是对话的标题（无伴奏阿基里斯奏鸣曲），A Dialogue which imitates the Bach Sonatas for unaccompanied violin. 这里 imitate 我直接没动脑子译成了“模拟”，其实更合适的是“模仿，摹仿”, 至于为啥，后者比前者多了“以…为模板(model)”的意思吧。

还有好几个词都有类似的意思，imitate, emulate, simulate, mimic，都啥区别？我查了下，现在脑子有点大，写不了了，因为看了我也没高清明显的区别，大家自行搜索下看Emulate, Simulate, Mimic And Imitate?。欢迎分享您的理解。

concern 也是个我不喜欢翻的词。这次理一下，基本义“与…有关”，有关系了，就会有“影响”，有影响了就会有某种被影响后的结果，会引起自己或别人的”关心，担忧“，就成了关系到自己的”重要的事情“。在这个句子里就是基本义就好了，可以选择的中文词想：

• 与…有关/相關
• 涉及
• 提到了
• 关系到
• 关联了
• 等等

显然，”涉及“更通顺些。

这句里的”ground“，GEB 中文翻译成”衬底“，没太懂，我以为是”背景“，图片的背景，不过背景一般是 background。查了下”衬底“好像半导体用的比较多？隔行如隔山啊，图画领域都叫衬底吗？

in various contexts，context 脑子固化了，就只想起上下文的意思，其实还有好多更通明的说法：

• 背景
• 环境、周围环境
• 场景、场合
• 语境
• 等

，GEB 中文选择了”语境“，”在不同语境下“。

The Dialogue itself forms an example of the distinction, since Achilles' lines form a "figure", and the Tortoise's lines-implicit in Achilles' lines-form a "ground".

又是 ’form’，连着 3 个 form，不过好在第一个 form 是和 example 搭配，就是举例了呗。不对，是对话本身成了一个例子，不是举了一个例子。后面两个 form 也简单，就是基本义”构成“的意思。

我的补充

isomorphism 同构是啥意思？先搬一下字典的解释：

Biology Similarity in form, as in organisms of different ancestry. 

【生物学】 同态性；同形性：形式上的相似性，如由不同的上代个体所产生的有机体的相似性

Mathematics A one-to-one correspondence between the elements of two sets such that the result of an operation on elements of one set corresponds to the result of the analogous operation on their images in the other set. 【数学】 同构：两组元素的一一对应的关系，这种关系使得对其中一组元素进行运算的结果对应于对它们在另一组中的像进行类似的运算所得的结果

A close similarity in the crystalline structure of two or more substances of similar chemical composition. 同晶性：两种或更多种具有相似化学组成的物质的晶体结构间的近似性

还是不太懂。就快速看了下书的后文关于同构的介绍：

“同构”这个词的适用情景是：两个复杂结构可以互相映射，并且每一个结构的每一部分在另一个结构中都有一个相应的部分。这里“相应”的意思是：在各自的结构中，相应的两个部分起着相类似的作用。

浅显易懂啊。马上联想到：（也许不尽对，初步理解大致是这样的）

• 这个世界本身就是个”同构“无处不在的地方
• 大到宇宙，地球是适合人居住的，宇宙中另有其他星球（虽然尚未明确）也是适合人居住的。若是，这些星球之间就存在可以对应的部分，比如有养气、水等等人生存之必需。科学家在那个星球上如找到地球上对应的，便可推断是否人可居住吧
• 小到人类和动物，有形的，人的五脏六腑对应小白鼠的五脏六腑，无形的，人体的生命机能对应小白鼠的生命机能，科学家拿小白鼠做实验，认为小白鼠上的实验结果也会在人身上产生同效。（虽然有时候并不。。。）
• 再比如计算机系统也够复杂吧，windows，linux 都各不相同，但他们彼此都有相互对应的部分，可以跑同一套代码
• 甚至现在不少还在搞 AI 么，人和电脑也在同构。。。
