How I teach oral English class online

Opportunities always come to me when I have the least expectation.

Why I take this job?

When I was a undergradute, I was offered a part-time job to teach primary students English. It was arranged as follows: one offline class (2h) and two online class (30m) each week. Judging from the length of time, it was easy to draw a conclusion that what I taught online was different from that of offline. Indeed, the class I taught online merely aimed to improve their oral English, in which accuracy and fluency in pronunciation were particularly foregrounded.

At that time, I taught three kids, two in the third grade and one the fourth or fifth grade. This time, I only taught the two smaller ones.

It was a bit of surprise to me when I received the message sent by the male parent of one kid, asking me whether I had time to teach the class. He explained that the teacher who taught the kids was so busy with other stuff and had no spare time for teaching online.

Normally I would say yes straightly, but this time I thought hard. I knew I had more important things to do, so I became very discreet in taking any part-time job.

After careful consideration, I decided to take this job, mostly because I had taught the two kids before for a long time and a connection had been established among us. I could say for sure that I didn' t take the job out of money.

How I teach

The textbook we used was called "Good English" and we started from Book 8 since they had learnt the previous seven books. Each book was comprised of a series of stories and each stories consisted of three sections. I taught one section in each class.

Honestly speaking, I found this book suitable for me to read, too. I had to look up some new words in the dictionary. However, I had to say, its plots were not so appealing to me, though twisting enough.

Before class, I required them to read the section loudly and sent their audios to our Wechat group. I would listen to their audios and gave feedbacks. If they had misprounced certains words, they needed to reread the sentence where the word located.

During class, I inspired their thinking mainly by asking smart and probing questions about the content. What I expected was more than a simple answer, I wanted to learn about their deducting and thinking process. Of course, there were some other teaching activities, but this one mattered most.

After class, they were encouraged to write 100-150 words in English to reflect themselves of what they had learnt from the class. More importantly, subtitles were essential, by doing which they can think and write logically. I didn't expect nice words, rather, I appreciated reasonable criticism and feasible suggestions for bettering the whole teaching and learning process.

to be continued.
