Ashtavakra Gita

Janaka said:

Master, how is wisdom to beachieved, detachment acquired, liberation attained? 1.1

Ashtavakra said:

My child, to be free, shun the poison of the sensual pleasure. Seek the nectar of truth, of love andforgiveness, simplicity and happiness. 1.2

You are not earth, water, fire or air. Nor are you empty space. Liberation is to know yourself asAwareness alone, the witness of these. 1.3

Abide in Awarenesswith no illusion of person. You will be instantly free and at peace. 1.4

No castes or duties bind you. Youare invisible, unattached, formless. You are the Witness of all things. Behappy. 1.5

Right and wrong, pleasure andpain, exist in mind only. They are not your concern. You neither do nor enjoy. You are free. 1.6

You are the one witness ofeverything and are always completely free. But if you see yourself as separate, then you arebound.1.7

“I do this. I do that.” The big black snake ofselfishness has bitten you! “I do nothing.” So drink this nectar of faith, andbe happy! 1.8

Know you are one, pure Awareness. With the fire ofthis conviction, burn down the forest of ignorance. Free yourself from sorrow, and be happy.1.9

Be happy! For you are joy, unbounded joy. You areawareness itself. Just as a coil of rope is mistaken for a snake, so you aremistaken for the world. 1.10

If you think you are free, you are free. If you thinkyou are bound, You are bound. For the saying is true: You are what you think. 1.11

Your real nature is the oneperfect, free, and actionless awareness, the all-pervading witness---unattached to anything, desire- lessand at peace. It is from illusion that you seem to be involved in Samsara. 1.12

Meditate on this: “I am Awarenessalone---Unity itself.” Give up theidea that you are separate, a person, that there is within and without. 1.13

My child, because you think you are the body, for along time you have been bound. Know you are pure Awareness. With this wisdom asyour sword cut through your chains. And be happy! 1.14

You are now and forever free, luminous, transparent, still. The practice of meditation to still the mindkeeps one in bondage.1.15

Your nature is pure Awareness. You exist in allthings, and all things exist in you. Don’t be small-minded 1.16

You are unconditioned, changeless, formless. You are immovable, unfathom- able, cool. Desire only your own aware- ness.. 1.17

That which has form is not real.Only the formless is permanent. Onceyou know the truth of this teaching, you will not be born again. 1.18

For God is infinite, within the body and without. Likea mirror, and the image is inside and outside a mirror. 1.19

Just as the same space existsboth within and without a jar, so the timeless, all- pervasive God exists inthe totality of things. 1.20

Once I have lived bewildered, in illusion. But now Iam awake, flawless and serene, beyond the world. 2.1

As I alone give light to thisbody, so I do to the world. I am Everything or Nothing. 2.2

So now that I have abandoned thebody and everything else, by good fortune my true Self becomes apparent. 2.3

Waves, foam, and bubbles is only water. So all creation, emanating from theSelf is only the Self. 2.4

Look closely at cloth, you seeonly threads. So all creation, when you look closely, is only the Self. 2.5

Like the sugar in the juice of the sugarcane, I am thesweetness in every- thing I have made. 2.6

From ignorance of the Self, theworld appears, and by knowledge of the Self it appears no longer. From ignoranceof the rope it appears to be a snake, and by knowledge of it the snake vanishes. 2.7

My nature is light, nothing but light. When the worldshines forth, it is only me that is shining forth. 2.8

The mirage of the world appearsin me as silver appears in mother-of-pearl, as a snake appears ina rope, as water appears on a desert horizon.2.9

As a pot returns to clay, a waveto water, a bracelet to gold, so will the universe return to Me.2.10

I adore myself. How wonderful I am! I can never die.The whole world may perish, from Brahma to a blade of grass, but I am stillhere.2.11

I adore myself. How wonderful I am! Even with a body I amOne. I neither come nor go. I am everywhere at once. 2.12

I adore myself. How wonderful I am! And how great mypowers! Theuniverse appears within me, but I do not touch it. 2.13

I adore myself. How wonderful I am! I am everythingthought or spoken, and have nothing 2.14

Knowledge, what is to be known, and the knower---these three do notexist in reality. They onlyappear when I am ignorant, for I am flawless.. 2.15

Two from one! This is the root of suffering. The Onlyremedy is to realize that I am one without two, pure Awareness, pure joy, andall the world is false. 2.16

Through ignorance I once imagined I was bound. But I ampure Awareness. I live beyond all distinctions, in unbroken meditation. 2.17

For me here is neither bondagenor liberation. It is allgroundless. Though the whole of creation rests in me, it is without foundation. 2.18

Recognising that all this and mybody too are nothing, while my true Self is nothing but pure consciousness, what is there left for the imagination to work on now? 2.19

The body, heaven and hell, bondage and liberation, and fear too, all this is pure imagination. What isthere left to do for me whose very nature is awareness? 2.20

I see no differences orseparation. Even the multitudes appear as a single formless desert. To whatshould I cling? 2.21

I am not the body, nor is thebody mine. I am awareness, not a person. It was my thirst for living that wasmy bondage. 2.22

I am the infinite ocean. The winds of the thoughts roilthe myriad waves of the world.2.23

But when the wind subsides in thelimitless ocean, the tradersinks with his ship, and all the worlds with him..2.24

How wonderful it is that in theinfinite ocean of myself, the waves of living beings arise, collide, play for atime, then disappear, in accordance with their nature. 2.25

Having realized the Self as One,being serene and indestructible, why do you desire wealth? 3.1

Just as from ignorance, you see silver inmother-of-pearl, and greed arises. So does ignorance of the Self cause desire for illusion.3.2

Having realized yourself as That,in which the waves of the world rise and fall, why do you run aroundwretchedly? 3.3

Having realized yourself as pureAwareness, as beautiful beyond description, how can you remain a slave to lust?3.4

Strange that when a sage hasrealized that he himself is in all beings, and all beings are in him, he still says, “This is mine. “ 3.5

Strange that one abiding in theAbsolute, intent on liberation, should still be subject to lust andheld back by sexual activity.3.6

Strange that knowing lust as anenemy of knowledge, one so weak and nearing death should still crave sensualpleasure. 3.7

Strange that one who isunattached to the things of this world and the next, who can discriminatebetween the transient and the timeless, who yearns for freedom, should yet fearthe dissolution of the body. 3.8

Whether acclaimed or tormented, the serene sage abides in himself. He is neither pleased nor angered. 3.9

A great sage witnesses his body’sactions as if they were another’s. How can praise or blame disturb him? 3.10

Realizing the universe isillusion, having lost all curiosity, how can one of steady mind fear death?3.11

The great sage who, contentknowing himself, desiresnothing, even in despair. How can we compare with him? 3.12

Why should a person of steadymind, who sees the objects as nothingness, prefer one thing to another? 3.13

The great sage is untouched by opposites. Free from desire, he has driven from hismind all longing for the world. Come what may, joy or sorrow, nothing moveshim. 3.14

Ashtavakra said:

The sageknows himself, and he plays the game of life. But the fool lives in the worldlike a beast of burden. 4.1

The true seeker feels no elation, even in thatexalted state which Indra and all the gods unhappily long for. 4.2

He understands the nature of things. His heart is notsmudged by right or wrong, as the sky is not smudged by smoke. 4.3

He is pure of heart, he knows the whole world is only theSelf. So who can stop him from doing as he wishes? 4.4

Of the four kinds of beings, from Brahma down to the last blade of grass, only the sageis strong enough to give up desire and aversion. 4.5

Rare is he who knows himself asOne with no other---the Lord of theUniverse. He acts as he knows and is never afraid. 4.6

Ashtavakra said:

You are pure. Nothing touches you. What is there torenounce? Let it all go, the body and the mind. Let yourself dissolve. 5.1

All the worlds arise in you, like bubbles out of the sea.Know yourself as One. Letyourself dissolve. 5.2

You see the world. But like the snake in the rope, itis not really there. You are immaculate.Let yourself dissolve.5.3

You are perfect, changeless, through joy and sorrow, hope and despair, life and death. Let yourself dissolve.5.4

I am boundless space. The world is a clay pot. This isthe truth. There is nothing to accept, nothing to reject, nothing to destroy. 6.1

I am the ocean. All the worlds are like waves. This isthe truth. There is nothing to accept, nothing to reject, nothing to destroy. 6.2

I am the mother-of-pearl. The world is a vein ofsilver, an illusion! This is the truth. There is nothing to accept, nothing toreject, nothing to destroy. 6.3

I am in all beings. All beings are in me. This is thewhole truth. There is nothing to accept, nothing to reject, nothing to destroy. 6.4

In me, the shoreless ocean, theark of the world drifts here and there on the winds of its nature. But I am not shaken. 7.1

In me, the shoreless ocean, the waves of the world naturally rise andfall. But I do not rise or fall. 7.2

In me, the shoreless ocean, theworld is imagined. I am still and formless. In this alone I abide. 7.3

I am not in the world. The world is not in me. I ampure. I am unbounded. I am tranquil, free from attachment, free from desire. In this alone I abide. 7.4

I am awareness itself. The world is a magic show! Butin me there is nothing to embrace, and nothing to turn away.7.5

Ashtavakra said:

When the mind desires or grievesthings, accepts or rejects things, is pleased or displeased by things---this is bondage. 8.1

When the mind does not desire orgrieve, accept or reject, become pleased or displeased, liberation is at hand.8.2

Bondage is when the mind istangled in one of the senses, and liberation is when the mind is not tangled inany of the senses. 8.3

When there is no “me,” that isliberation, and when there is “me” there is bondage. Consider this carefully, and neither hold on to anything nor reject anything. 8.4

Seeing to this, neglecting that, setting one thingagainst another. Who is free of such cares? When will they ever end?Considering this, be ever desireless, let go of all things, and to the worldturn an indifferent eye. 9.1

My child, rare is he, and blessed, who observes theways of men and gives up the desire for pleasure, knowledge, and life itself. 9.2

Nothing lasts. Nothing is real. All things arethreefold affliction! It is all beneath contempt. Know this. Give them up andattain peace. 9.3

When will men ever stop setting one thing againstanother? Let go of all contraries. Whatever comes, be happy and so fulfillyourself.9.4

Masters, saints, seekers: They all say differentthings. Whoever knows this, with dispassion becomes still. 9.5

One who through dispassion andequani- mity, realizes the nature of awareness, and leads others out of Samsara---is he not a guru? 9.6

In the myriad forms of the worldsee the primal element alone. You will be instantly free, and rest in your own nature. 9.7

Abandon desire, which is theenemy. Abandon prosperity, which is born of mischief and good works. Beindifferent to everything. 10.1

Look upon friends, lands, wealth, houses, wives, gifts and good fortune as a dream or a magician’s show lastingthree to five days. 10.2

Wherever there is desire, there is Samsara. Withresolute dispassion free yourself from desire, and find happiness. 10.3

Bondage and desire are the same.Destroy desire and be free. Only by detaching from the world does one joyfullyrealize Self. 10.4

You are one. You are pure Awareness. The world is notreal. It is cold and lifeless. Nor is ignorance real. So what can you wish toknow?10.5

Attached as you have been tokingdoms, sons, wives, bodies, pleasures---lifeafter life---still they are now lostforever. 10.6

Enough of wealth, sensuality, andgood deeds. In the forest of Samsara the mind hasnever found satisfaction in these. 10.7

How many births have you not donehard and painful labor with body, mind, and speech? It is time to stop. Now! 10.8

God made all things. There is only God. Realizing this, desire melts away. Clinging to nothing, you become still. 11.2

Realizing, “I am not the body, nor is the body mine. I am awareness,” you have no thought for what you have done or left undone. You become one, perfect and indivisible. 11.6

Realizing, “from Brahma down to ablade of grass, I alone exist,” youhave no thought for success or failure or the mind’s inconstancy. You are pureand still. 11.7

Detached from the senses, you are free. Attached, youare bound. When this is understood, you may live as you please. 15.2

This awareness of the truth makesan eloquent, clever and energetic man dumb, stupid and inert. No wonder those who wish to enjoy the worldshun this understanding! 15.3

You are not your body. Your body is not you. You neither do norenjoy. You are pure Awareness, the witness of all things. You are in need of nothing. You are free, so live happily. 15.4

One who disdains sense pleasuresavoids them. One who desires them becomes ensnared. One who neither disdainsnor desires is neither detached nor attach- ed.16.6

As long as there is desire---which is the absence ofdiscrimination---there will beattachment and non-attachment. Thisis the root and branches of the world. 16.7

Indulgence creates attachment.Aversion creates abstinence. Like a child, the sage is free of both and thuslives on as a child.16.8

If you desire liberation, butyou still say "mine,” If you feel you are the body, you are not a wise manor seeker. You are simply a man who suffers.16.10

If evenShiva, Vishnu, or the lotus-born Brahma were your instructor, unless you forget everything, you will never knowSelf.16.11
