He had recently agreed to establish the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University (founded in 1985—— noted by the citatory), and he offered to set up a similar teaching museum at Peking University which would be a repository for the best of the University’s collection, and which would enable Chinese students to learn museology for the first time;he also envisaged what he felt could be the finest sculpture garden in the world. He knew how important it was for Chinese students to understand the various roles of such an institution—the teaching of history, visual appreciation and technological prowess and progress. He stressed that the new facility must be of the highest quality. To wards that goal the best technology together with state of the art techniques of object conservation. I therefore believe that at the timeof its opening this museum will have the highest standards of display, lighting, temperature and humidity control in the country. As Arthur remarked: “The significance of a contribution is not monetary. Its evaluation relates to the extent to which it enhances scholarship, preserves cultural heritages, advances the common good, and fosters better understanding and mutual esteem between different peoples and countries. In respect to all of these, those who are qualified can exercise and express their opinions, and history will provide the ultimate judgement.”
