外文笔记》第二册所收第六本笔记前面五十多页，整理者定为读德国哲学家法依兴格尔《
假如哲学》英译本（The Philosophy of “As-if”，1924）的笔记，实在错得离谱。其实这五十多页全是读沃德主编五卷本名家导读《
英诗选》（The English Poets，1880-1918）的笔记。
借《
上海书评》光，很快拿到新出版的《
钱锺书手稿集·外文笔记》第一辑。此辑一共三册，收入钱锺书先生1935年到1938年英法游学期间读外文书的十本笔记。除小部分是用打字机敲出外，其余全系手抄。要想读懂这些笔记，我们得像钱先生在牛津学古文字学（paleography）那样，“用针尖点着一个个字认”（
杨绛《
我们仨》）。我先挑涉及哲学的部分看了一下，感觉整理得不是最理想，尤其是有个很大的错误。现在就把这个错误写出来，供整理者和研究者参考。
《外文笔记》第二册所收第六本笔记前面五十多页（263-318页），整理者定为读德国哲学家法依兴格尔（Hans Vaihinger，1852-1933）《假如哲学》英译本（The Philosophy of “As-if”，1924）的笔记，实在错得离谱。其实这五十多页全是读沃德（Thomas Humphry Ward，1845-1926）主编五卷本名家导读《英诗选》（The English Poets，1880-1918）的笔记。下边按原书卷次章节重新把钱先生摘抄的条目简单整理一下，每条后面注上《外文笔记》第二册的页码。

整理者为什么将这五十多页定为读法依兴格尔《假如哲学》的笔记呢？这应该同笔记正文首页天头的几行字有关：

Rationalism in Europe即莱基（William Edward Hartpole Lecky, 1838-1903）写的《
欧洲唯理论史》（History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe）。桑塔亚纳（George Santayana, 1863-1952）的书，题目应作Interpretations of Poetry and Religion，钱先生把“poetry”和“religion”抄反了。由于笔记该页摘抄的是马修·阿诺德总导读中对“作为诗歌的宗教”（religion as poetry）的有关论述，而莱基、桑塔亚纳和法依兴格尔又都分别在自己的著作中对这个问题做过相似的论述，相互之间可以参照，所以钱先生会在天头把三个人的著作同时标出来。其实，在笔记本扉页上面明明写着：

Thomas Humphry Ward, M.A.
（这三行字下面写着钱先生堂弟钱锺纬[C. W. Chien]在英国博尔顿留学时的住址）
整理者为什么不根据这个线索去锁定笔记本的内容呢？实在令人不解。类似的问题还有，以后有机会再说。
